The Big Idaho Potato Truck was spotted on I-84 on Monday afternoon, July 8.

This is the eighth cross-country journey for the enormous, four-ton spud that weighs more than 44,000 pounds (including the truck) and measures 72 feet.

It began in 2012 as a one-year campaign to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Idaho Potato Commission, but its immediate popularity has made it an annual tradition.

The truck was seen in Putnam County at around 4 p.m. Monday heading east toward Danbury. It was en route to the Spudman Open Tournament being held Tuesday, July 9 and Wednesday, July 10 in Farmington, Connecticut.

The Spudman Open, which started in 1977, is one of the oldest golf tournaments in the produce business. The name Spudman was made up by a group of college kids who packed potatoes during the summer months to earn enough money to pay tuition.
